How many small business owners take workplace injuries seriously?

A small business insurer reported the information gathered in a survey in which more than 1,000 adult employees of small businesses in California and other states were questioned about the safety training they receive at work. Looking at the results, it seems that many small business owners do not realize that their employees are probably their biggest assets. By creating safe environments, workplace injuries that cause days off can be limited, while production -- and ultimately the bottom line -- can be improved.

Of all the employees that responded, 17 percent answered that they receive no safety training at work. Even more alarming is the fact that of those who are employed by businesses where there are less than 10 employees, 25 percent responded that safety training is not provided. Furthermore, 40 percent replied that there was no safety information of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration displayed as required by the federal safety agency.

However, all is not doom and gloom. Although 10 percent of the respondents did not believe their safety is taken seriously by their employers, 96 percent of the workers employed by small businesses with more than 10 employees reported the opposite. In smaller companies, 87 percent were of the opinion that their employers prioritized their safety.

Advisors suggest business owners create environments that not only prioritize employee safety but also encourage workers to report hazards and be involved in finding solutions that will limit injury risks. However, those who do fall victim to workplace injuries may file benefits claims with the California workers' compensation insurance program. Typical coverage cover medical expenses and lost income if the injuries caused temporary disability.
