Fall protection saves 2 lives — only workplace injuries suffered

On behalf of Godwin and Rubin posted in Workplace Injuries on Tuesday, May 2, 2017.

Working at heights pose unique hazards, and the lives of workers typically depend on their employers’ compliance with safety regulations. Fall protection can save lives, as was proved in a recent incident when two California workers fell from a height of 40 feet. Both men suffered workplace injuries, but their fall harnesses and lanyards likely saved their lives.

According to an incident report, emergency services received a report about a workplace accident at the construction site of a Facebook Building in Menlo Park in the late afternoon of a recent Wednesday. Reportedly, two men fell from where they were assembling a steel frame at the height of 40 feet. Fortunately, they were secured to anchor points by lanyards that were attached to their fall harnesses, and their falls were arrested at 20 feet.

Paramedics from the fire department who arrived within seven minutes reported that the two workers had already been removed from their harnesses and brought to safety by the time of their arrival. Apparently, co-workers feared the collapse of the structure and moved the victims. Although fall harnesses can save lives, being suspended in them for even a few minutes can cause an injury known as suspension trauma. Both men reportedly complained of puncture wounds and acute pain in their lower extremities, and ambulances rushed them to a trauma center.

The two California employees who suffered workplace injuries in this incident may be unable to return to work immediately, and when they do, they might suffer long-term consequences. Sometimes, when such near-fatal accidents occur, victims suffer psychological damage along with their physical injuries. With the assistance of an experienced workers’ compensation attorney, benefits claims can be pursued to obtain full and fair compensation.
