Legislation proposed to reduce workplace accidents

There are many laws in California and around the country in place to protect employees while on the job. In addition, most companies have active programs in place to reduce the number of workplace accidents. Recent legislation was introduced in the U.S. Senate to improve working conditions.

A senator from another state, a senior member of the Employment and Workplace Safety Subcommittee, introduced the bill. It is known as the Protecting America’s Workers Act and, if passed, would update the federal Occupational Safety and Health Act. The bill’s sponsor wants employees in the nation to have safer conditions in the workplace.

According to the supporters of the bill, many people have unsafe working environments, which could lead to preventable deaths or injuries. The Act would help to modernize workplaces and reduce exposure to job hazards. Proponents of the bill want to offer Occupational Safety and Health Administration coverage to employees who don’t currently have it.

Also, legislation includes stricter civil and criminal penalties for violations. There are provisions in the legislation that increase antidiscrimination protections. A similar law was introduced during the last session of Congress, but no action was taken on it. California residents should feel secure in knowing that national lawmakers are striving to reduce exposure to unsafe working conditions.
